Many of my students have such poor reading skills that I recently began working on phonemic awareness skills. Current research shows a correlation between poor phonemic awareness and poor reading skills, so I have begun booster groups for struggling readers, both identified and non-identified students.

The following are great tools to obtain baselines for students: the DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) FREE program as well as the Phonological Awareness subtest of the Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals test.
